Tragic Accident Claims Two Lives on Jinja-Kampala Highway
In the early hours of August 4th, 2023, a devastating road accident occurred along the Jinja-Kampala highway in Kitigoma village, Buikwe District, claiming two lives, according to a statement from the Njeru Police Station.
The incident, which took place at approximately 5:20 AM, involved two motor vehicles: a Fuso Fighter (registration number UBB 716F) originating from Jinja, and a Mercedes-Benz Fuel Tank vehicle (registration numbers UAY 077A/UAY 928A) heading towards Jinja.
Based on initial investigations, the Fuso Fighter crossed into the lane of oncoming traffic, causing a head-on collision with the fuel tanker. The driver and turnman of the Fuso Fighter, whose identities are yet to be confirmed, tragically lost their lives in the accident.
Emergency services worked swiftly to remove the bodies from the wreckage and to transport the fuel tank’s driver and turnman, both critically injured, to Jinja Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The vehicles involved in the accident remain at the scene while the police conduct further inquiries and prepare for their removal. The surrounding area has been cordoned off to facilitate the ongoing investigation and to ensure the safety of other road users.
In the wake of this tragedy, SP Butoto Hellen, the PRO Ssezibwa Region, has issued an urgent appeal to all motorists to prioritize road safety. “We urge all road users to prioritize road safety and avoid reckless driving,” Hellen stated.
