Counter-Terrorism Directorate Thwarts Bombing Attempt in Kampala: Suspect in Custody
KAMPALA, Uganda — In a significant operation, the Directorate of Counter-Terrorism, in collaboration with the territorial team in Kampala Metropolitan East, foiled a potential bombing attempt on July 31, 2023. The suspect, identified as Mugabe Collins, aged 23, was apprehended at Banda zone II, Nakawa division, following an accidental explosion.

The incident unfolded after Collins allegedly tampered with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) he had assembled, triggering it off prematurely. Upon receiving information about the explosion, the Counter-Terrorism directorate and the territorial team immediately cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation.
The security teams discovered a second IED and a variety of bomb-making materials at the scene. These materials included three jerrycans of nitric acid, methanol, and ethanol, six bottles of various chemicals including potassium nitrate, potassium bromide, ammonium nitrate, and lead nitrate in addition to aluminum metal powder. Notebooks containing information about bomb-making were also retrieved.
Collins is currently under interrogation to determine any potential links to terrorist groups and to uncover any possible targets.
In an official statement, SCP Enanga Fred, Police Spokesperson, expressed gratitude towards the counter-terrorism squad, the bomb squad, the territorial teams in KMP East, and the local community in Banda zone II, Nakawa. “This case serves as another reminder for continued vigilance in the community,” Fred stated.
The operation underscores the authorities’ unwavering commitment to maintaining national security and their ongoing efforts to counter and neutralize all forms of terrorism and extremism in the country, as per the police spokesperson.
The investigation is ongoing and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
