Uganda’s Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo Scores Big: CAF Approves Hosting of Continental Tournaments, Cementing Africa’s Football Future

Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has reached a new pinnacle in its journey as a world-class sports facility after securing approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host some of the continent’s most prestigious tournaments. This milestone underscores Uganda’s growing influence in African football and highlights the country’s dedication to building top-tier sporting infrastructure.

The stadium, which officially opened its doors on June 1, 2024, has been granted the green light to host matches for the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as well as the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. CAF officials lauded the stadium for its modern design, advanced technology, and commitment to elevating the standard of football in Africa.

This achievement follows a series of high-profile recognitions for Hamz Stadium. In October 2024, FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally awarded the stadium its turf certification, praising it as a model for other African nations. Earlier this year, the facility was shortlisted for a Global Award, further cementing its reputation as one of the world’s leading sports venues.

Rogers Mulindwa, Chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee, expressed his gratitude to the Ugandan government and the country’s sports leaders for their unwavering support.

He specifically acknowledged President Yoweri Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, and FUFA President Moses Magogo for their roles in making this vision a reality.

“This is a moment of pride for all Ugandans,” Mulindwa said. “Hamz Stadium is not just a venue; it is a symbol of our nation’s progress and ambition. We are ready to welcome the continent and showcase the best of African football.”
