Police foil robbery attempt at Ugandan Ex MP’s residence

A group of armed robbers attempted to break into the residence of Hon. Mubarak Munyagwa, an ex-Member of Parliament for Kawempe South, in the early hours of January 3rd, 2024. The police were alerted by Hon. Munyagwa and arrived at the scene within minutes, thwarting the robbery attempt.

According to a press statement issued by the Uganda Police Force, the incident occurred at around 3 a.m. in Kimbejja Cell, Budo Ward, Kyengera Town Council. The robbers, who were armed with sharp objects, tried to force their way into Hon. Munyagwa’s home but were confronted by the police team led by the Division Police Commander.

The police statement said that the security guard at the residence, Benjamin Mpaka, was injured by the robbers and taken to Mulago Hospital for treatment. No one else was harmed in the incident.

The police also said that they deployed K9 units to track down the robbers, but their efforts were hampered by heavy rain. However, they managed to arrest one suspect who was fleeing in a Datsun pickup with registration number UAK 182A. The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with the investigations.

The police also dismissed some social media posts that claimed that there was a shooting at Hon. Munyagwa’s residence, saying that the robbers were only armed with sharp objects and no firearms were used. The police praised Hon. Munyagwa for his quick action in reporting the incident, which enabled them to respond effectively and prevent further damage.

Hon. Munyagwa is a vocal opposition politician and was the chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities, and State Enterprises (COSASE) in the 9th parliament. He has not issued any public statement on the incident as of yet.
