KAMPALA – Outspoken Ugandan parliamentarian Honorable Lutamaguzi narrowly escaped an apparent assassination attempt while walking to an ATM machine.
According to Lutamaguzi, a mysterious, unmarked vehicle with no license plates made two deliberate attempts to run him down at high speed. After failing on the first pass, the car purportedly reversed at breakneck speed for another try before the quick-footed MP jumped to safety.
The car then raced away into traffic. Lutamaguzi expressed deep concern about persistent threats on his life.
The MP is known as a vocal critic of longtime President Yoweri Museveni’s authoritarian government and has consistently called for democratic reforms.
This brazen daylight attack has raised alarms about the safety of dissident voices in Uganda. Lutamaguzi remains anxious about future attempts on his life.
As an outspoken advocate for change, the maverick legislator appears undeterred. But the near-miss has underscored the environment of fear and intimidation faced by opposition leaders under Museveni’s decades-long rule.
