Tragic Road Crash Claims Life of NUP Supporter in Convoy; Stricter Measures Imposed

Hoima District, Uganda – A National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter lost his life and ten others were injured in a devastating road crash on Monday evening. The incident occurred as the convoy, led by NUP president Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, and was en route to Kigorobya sub-county in Hoima district for a campaign rally.

The Albertine region police spokesperson, Mr. Julius Hakiza, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Mr. Norman Mugisa, a resident of Kiryatete. According to Hakiza, the fatal crash took place when unknown vehicles and motorcycles within the convoy struck Mr. Mugisa.

“At 5:30 pm, we received reports of a tragic incident where one person lost his life on the spot, and ten others sustained injuries. These individuals were part of the convoy heading to Kigorobya sub-county to attend a campaign rally for NUP candidate Mr. Moses Aguuda. The incident took place at Mumpuda along the Hoima-Buliisa road,” explained Hakiza.

Mr. Mugisa, a technician from Buhimba town council in Kikuube district, tragically died at the scene of the road crash. The injured victims, whose identities are yet to be established, were promptly rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment.

Hakiza attributed the cause of the crash to reckless driving and speeding, emphasizing that earlier in the day, warnings were issued to all drivers to prioritize safety and refrain from speeding within convoys. In response to these recent events, the police have decided to take stricter measures, including impounding vehicles and motorcycles driven recklessly.

“We have initiated a general inquiry file for this incident. We encourage anyone with information about the vehicles and motorcycles involved in the accident to report to the police,” urged Hakiza while emphasizing the importance of public cooperation with law enforcement efforts.

The deceased’s body has been handed over to his family, and investigations into the tragic crash are ongoing. This unfortunate incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for vigilance and responsible driving practices to ensure the safety of all road users, particularly during high-profile events and political campaigns.

As the community mourns the loss of Mr. Mugisa, authorities and citizens alike are reflecting on the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations to prevent further tragedies on Uganda’s roads.
