Police Arrests Aponye’s Driver

In Ntungamno District, Western Uganda, local police have detained the driver of prominent business magnate Apollo Nyegamehe, commonly known as Aponye, following his tragic death in a car accident last Thursday. The fatal crash occurred when the vehicle Aponye was traveling in collided with a stationary Fuso truck along the Kabale-Mbarara highway near Itojo.

Aponye was en route to attend a burial ceremony in his home village when the accident took place, claiming his life and leaving the three other occupants injured. His driver, Mr. Moses Buyinza, survived the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment before being detained by the police on charges of causing death due to reckless driving.

Rwizi region Police spokesperson, Mr. Samson Kasasira, stated that the driver is being held at Ntungamo Central Police Station while the case file awaits review by the resident state attorney. Buyinza, who suffered a head injury in the crash, was initially admitted to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital before being transferred to the police station.

Kasasira also noted that the owner of the stationary Fuso truck, which was loaded with Irish potatoes, has been identified, and its driver is currently on the run. Police efforts to locate the truck driver are ongoing, and the vehicle owner has been asked to assist in the investigation.

The cause of the crash was initially attributed to speeding. Aponye will be laid to rest today in Kigo village, Muhanga town council, Rukiiga district.
