KYENJOJO – A devastating bus accident on the morning of July 11th took the life of driver Kawawu Dauda and left several injured along the busy Kampala-Fort Portal Road.
Authorities report that around 9:15AM, a Link Bus Services coach headed to Kampala fatally rear-ended a broken-down Mercedes trailer near Mukunyu in Kyenjojo District.
“The bus was traveling at high speed and was unable to stop in time before violently crashing into the stationary trailer,” said SP Twesige Vincent, Public Relations Officer for Rwenzori West Police. “The driver was killed instantly.
Several shocked passengers were rushed to Kyenjojo Hospital for treatment of injuries. The exact number of injured victims has not yet been confirmed.
The mangled bus, with registration number M/V UAY 485E, had significant front-end damage. The trailer it hit, UAV 326W, was also severely damaged in the collision.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway. Excess speed is suspected to be a factor.
SP Vincent cautioned drivers to be extra vigilant along the busy Kampala-Fort Portal highway and adhere to speed limits.
