Hope For NUP’s Imprisoned Lawmakers as State Drops 3 Witnesses and Grants Their Release.

The Directorate of Public Prosecution has recanted the affidavits of three state witnesses who had implicated MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana in the Greater Masaka Region murders.

State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka announced their decision to withdraw the three statements in which the MPs were charged with the murder of Joseph Bwanika, a resident of Kankamba village in the Lwengo region, when he appeared before Masaka High Court Judge Lawrence Tweyanze on Monday morning.

The withdrew affidavits, according to the state attorney, were signed on January 23, 2023, by Thomas Jatiko, Jennifer Amumpaire, and Detective SP Innocent Mubangizi.

Additionally, the State Attorney notified the court that the DPP no longer objected to the MPs being given bail.

The MPs have been imprisoned since September 2021 in connection with a string of murders in the Greater Masaka region.

As investigations continued, the Prosecution resisted the release of the aforementioned MPs on bail.

Among other things, the MPs expressed concern about their health.

Weeks ago, Hon Ssewanyana was admitted transferred from Kigo Prison to Luzira Prison’s main hospital with complications, before he was later referred to Mulago Hospital.

The court was hearing from the State and the State on bail terms for the two MPs at the time of publication of this story.
