Today, the Masaka High Court presided over by Judge Lawrence Tweyanze has granted bail to the National Unity Platform party legislators, Honorable Seggirinya and Sewanyana, who had been in prison for nearly 18 months.
The presiding judge ruled in their favor, granting them release from jail while they await their trial.
This marked the first time that the Leader of the Opposition, Rt. Hon. Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, and Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Ssegona, appeared in court together.
Senior State Resident Attorney Richard Birivumbuka withdrew three affidavits of prosecution witnesses that he had previously opposed the bail application on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The affidavits withdrawn were sworn by Thomas Jatiko, Jennifer Amumpaire, and Detective SP Innocent Mubangizi and tendered in on January 23, 2023, in the murder case in which MPs Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya are accused of killing one Joseph Bwanika, a resident of Kankamba village, Kisekka B village, Lwengo district, Birivumbuka.
Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana are accused of masterminding the killings in greater Masaka that killed at least 28 people between February and August 2021.
