Neymar scored his 77th goal for the Selecao while competing in their World Cup quarterfinal match against Croatia, passing Pele as the Selecao’s all-time leading scorer.
Pele, who has been unwell recently, scored 77 goals for Brazil in 92 appearances for the national team. The 82-year-old former striker won three World Cups between 1957 and 1971, when he played his first game for the country.
Neymar, 30, who is playing in his 124th match for Brazil, scored against Croatia on Friday as Brazil advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar (9 December).
In extra time, the winger scored the game’s only goal by dribbling around Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic and firing a shot high into the back of the net.
With 115 goals in 171 games for the national women’s team, Marta is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer.
